SThe Potential for Evil
I remember an assistant who came to see me almost in tears. During the night he had been infuriated by a person with a disability and a lot of violence had welled up I him. “I could have killed him,” he told me. I was able to tell him that I too had lived through such an experience, and that it had been a turning point in my life. I saw all the potential for evil hidden deep within me. It was a moment of conversion for me. There are things in us that we cannot change all at once; it takes time. We have to negotiate with our bodies, our defense mechanisms and our particular sources of anguish.
