Jean Vanier at OFSAA

Jean Vanier athletes competed at OFSAA this past weekend. Here is some video of the Boys 4 X 100.  Vanier didn't win, but raced a personal best.  Well done!

End of Year School Mass

We celebrated our end of the year Mass this morning in our Quad.  The weather was wonderful, and it was a fitting concluding celebration to a fantastic school year.  Thank you to everyone who made this visible expression of our Catholic faith such a memorable moment!

Principal's Breakfast

Our annual Principal's Breakfast to recognize our Honour Roll students was on May 15.  This year we recognized over 215 students, and we were pleased a number of their parents were able to join us for this celebration.  We have now posted pictures of the event.  Enjoy!

End of Year Mass Is Thursday, June 4

On Thursday, June 4, the Jean Vanier community will be holding our final Mass of the year. This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the end of the school year, and to give thanks to God for everything with which we have been blessed and all that He has allowed us to accomplish. Normally students report to St. Marie Goretti Church at 9 am for Mass. However, this Thursday we will be celebrating Mass at the school in our newly refurbished Quad.  As always, attendance at Mass is required for all students.  Parents, please note that all students will now report directly to school at the regular time. They will attend period one, and then will attend one of two Masses during period 2.  Any student not at school will be marked absent and a call home will be made.

As always parents are welcome to attend. If you would like to join us, the first Mass will begin at approximately 10 am. Please report to the main office if you do attend.

The Rebirth of the Vanier Quad

If you have managed to visit Jean Vanier in the past, you may have noticed that in the middle of our school we have a wonderful outdoor quadrangle, with tiered seating, that is enclosed on four sides and surrounded by some wonderful trees and bushes. Unfortunately over the years, the Quad has not been used, the vegetation has become overgrown and it has become a little rundown.  That is all changing.  Our Student Council and its teacher moderators recently applied for a Government Speak Out Grant. Their application was successful, and the money they received has resulted in the rebirth of our Quad.  Through some hard work, and the pulling in of some external resources, the Quad is well on its way to being a fully functional space at Vanier. The vegetation has been pruned, the grounds tidied up, park benches have been purchased and the walls are being scraped and are in the process of receiving a new coat of paint. We hope to have our end of year mass in the Quad on Thursday. The Quad will then become an area where students can meet, study and have lunch in good weather. There are even tentative plans to hold on outdoor dance in September. Thank you to the Student Council and its teacher moderators, Ms. Sisca, Ms. Barbitta and Ms. Avecillas, for doing such a wonderful job.

Jean Vanier Grade 9 Summer School

At Jean Vanier we are busily planning for the 2009-2010 school year. In particular, we are looking forward to welcoming another large number of new grade 9 students to our community.

For a teenager, it is natural to feel both excitement and anxiety when starting high school. To assist with the  transition to high school, and to provide our new Grade 9 students with every opportunity to succeed at Jean Vanier, we are offering an exclusive Jean Vanier Summer School Program for incoming Jean Vanier Grade 9 students. These students will be supported by Jean Vanier teachers and Jean Vanier peer tutors. Five courses are being offered. This program will offer students the opportunity to:

  • Earn a high school credit BEFORE starting high school in September

  • Have curriculum delivered by Jean Vanier teachers

  • Learn new curriculum or work on important literacy and numeracy skills that will help them succeed in Grade 9

  • Take part in a high school experience before starting high school

  • Meet their new peers and Jean Vanier teachers

It is our hope that students taking part in this program will be well prepared in September to start a successful high school career.

There are a limited number of courses being offered and students will be accepted into the Jean Vanier Summer School Program on a first come basis. An application package, with full course descriptions, has already been mailed to all incoming Grade 9 students. You can download the package below. Application deadline is Friday, June 05.
